Joss Whedon fans unite!
Fan-run fundraiser to create a second season of Firefly. Here's hoping it works. Honestly, I don't have TOO high of hopes, but it'd be pretty wicked if they pulled it off.

UPDATE: Well that didn't last long, the group is no longer collecting funds.

Yeah, Aaron. Doesn't really seem to be a viable option to me. Though, I don't know - maybe if the Serenity DVDs sell well enough... (got my copy Wednesday or so).

And they're already at $387! How long has this site been up?

The people who raised money to buy Nathan Fillion the browncoat should donate.

"Enterprise" tried this last year. Even with well over $3 million raised, they could barely get the studios to acknowledge them. I suspect part of it is that movie/tv studios seem to be generally averse to doing things differently than they've been done, and so if someone comes along proposing a new method of funding or some such, their inclination is going to be towards skepticism and disinterest. There's also the fact that it can be an embarassment for the studio - even if financially it were to make sense for them to take the money and make the new season, they may feel it's worth passing on it to avoid being seen as being second-guessed. It's not just a matter of being to proud to admit that they were wrong, but of realising that there is potential long-term financial value in not being seen as having been wrong.

I'd like to see more "Firefly" as much as anyone else. But I think that the main effect that this will have is to provide new fodder for the anti-Whedon folks, in much the same way that the "Save Enterprise" campaign just became another excuse to bash Ent fans.

Never heard that. When did that happen?

Do you mean the campaign, or the bashing? The campaign started up last spring, shortly after the announcement that the show was being cancelled. The bashing started almost immediately afterwards. Any time the "Save Enterprise" campaign was mentioned on the TrekBBS boards, there would be a number of responses from naysayers who would, in their milder form, just say that it was a pipe-dream that would never work, and, in their more extreme form, allege that the people running the campaign were, in fact, lying to fans and just running a big scam. The main thrust of all of the negative opinions was that Ent fans were horribly naive people to be even bothering to try something like this.

Yay! I thought something like this might happen- it would be great if it happened, it could realy change how the producing companies look at large fan base projects that don't pull in a lot of dough. More Firefly! :) That just made my day.

Looks like it is already a lost cause.

From their site:

No more donations are being taken at this time!
We are in the process of returning all donations received. We came up against insurmountable odds and legal issues launching our fund-raising drive. firefly@browncoatsriseagain.com

If the money is buring a hole in your pocket, please buy a DVD. Firely and Serenity sales at this time will further our cause. We will continue the fight to re-light Firefly using other methods. Thank you for you support in our first 36 hours of activity.
